About The Robin's Gaze

The Robin’s Gaze is book one of a new historical fiction trilogy following Alvin’s journey from Ireland to America.
It’s a prequel to the four book McGinn Family Saga and begins 26 years before The Red Road.
The series has a more romantic element about them, but these are not romance novels. I tried to put myself back in the shoes of a young person and wanted to capture the hope that comes with youth. When you are young, the excitement of feeling love for the first time makes you feel that anything is possible. But life is not all sunshine and shamrocks. The things we take for granted can sometimes be taken away. Like my other novels, this series is a character driven journey through life, peppered with culture and superstitions from Ireland.
Since I don’t write from a plot, different aspects emerge from researching the place and time and add to the story. While writing this book, I was researching a superstition I had seen in an old movie and from there, multiple elements of the story were added that I could not have captured had I been working from an outlined plot.
With this trilogy, I am taking a page from Taylor Sheridan’s playbook. He’s the creator of Yellowstone, 1882 and 1923. The characters outside of the McGinn family all have back stories of their own, and I never really appreciated it until I wrote the pilot for a TV series based on the Red Road. When you write a script, the fringe characters from the book take on a much larger role, and the viewer can start to see the world through their eyes. I realized this when writing the Parker Moreland character in the script. In the books, he is obviously a villain, but was he really a bad guy? He was a ruthless and unscrupulous
businessman, but he never actually hurt anyone. He simply used the system to maximize his gains. Once I realized this, he became much more interesting to me and certainly more interesting to write.
The Robin's Gaze is available for NOW for Kindle.
